The Executive Council of Cities and Villages (excluding C. Madison) served by Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is now accepting nominations for individuals wishing to serve on the MMSD Commission. The deadline to submit a nomination is 5 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2026.

One of the three (3) MMSD Commission seats represented by cities and villages (excluding Madison) is up for appointment or re-appointment this fall. The current 3-year term of MMSD Commissioner Thomas Hovel is expiring. Commissioner Hovel has indicated that he will not seek reappointment to the position this fall; he has served in this position since 1992 (34 years). It should be further noted that Commissioner Hovel has been elected and served as President of the Commission since it was reorganized in October 2015, when owner \ user municipalities obtained direct appointments.

The current MMSD Commissioners that have been appointed by this council:

• Thomas Hovel of McFarland (term expires in 2026)
• Patrick Lytle of Verona (term expires in 2027)
• Ken Clark of DeForest (term expires in 2028)

Chief elected officials in the MMSD sewer area that wish to make a nomination to the MMSD Commission should submit the nominee's cover letter and resume (with contact information) to the Dane County Cities and Villages Association office, admin@dccva.org. The nomination deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 2026.

The Executive Council previously agreed to limit the number of nominations that each may make - to one nomination from each chief elected official/community. All nominations to MMSD by the Executive Council must be residents living within the MMSD district; they do not need to be an elected official.

The "Executive Council" is comprised of the chief elected officials of the cities and villages served by the MMSD (not including the C. Madison). The cities/villages in this nomination/appointment process are: the cities of Fitchburg, Middleton, Monona and Verona and the villages of Cottage Grove, Dane, DeForest, Maple Bluff, McFarland, Shorewood Hills, Waunakee and Windsor. NOTE: Towns/communities not represented by the City/Village Executive Council will be making their own appointments to the MMSD Commission (i.e., the town sanitary/utility districts and the City of Madison) and are not part of this nomination process.
